Long Beach Leaders are Readers: Councilwoman Mary Zendejas, A Champion of Resilience and Community

BY: Long Beach Public Library Foundation

Reading has the power to inspire and uplift, much like the remarkable leaders in our community. In Long Beach Leaders are Readers, we celebrate the individuals whose dedication and vision shape the city we call home.

This December, we’re honored to feature Long Beach City Councilwoman Mary Zendejas, a disability trailblazer whose life is a testament to resilience and public service. Born to immigrant parents and diagnosed with polio as an infant, Mary’s journey has been defined by determination. She became the first in her family to graduate high school and her degree from California State University Long Beach and has spent more than 30 years advocating for her community. Councilwoman Zendejas currently represents the first district, a dynamic area that includes the downtown and Shoreline waterfront, many historic neighborhoods, and the Port of Long Beach’s operational area.

Join us as Councilwoman Mary Zendejas shares a special book recommendation for our youngest community members!
